Go to an animal shelter...my daughter stops in our local one and volunteers all the time, with no need to sign up or commit.  You might be able to read or spend an afternoon at a daycare/preschool but you might need to be fingerprinted there so call first to see.

Pick up trash in the park. Play checkers with residents of a nursing home. Shelve books at the library. Next time, plan to start sooner!
