My husband just bought our family a cockatiel and i just feel like he doesn't like me. when i take him out of his cage he screeches and hisses at me most the time. i am such an animal lover but why doesn't he love me or does he?

Is there any toy i can get him or game i can play with him to make him happier and be happy with me?

Also another important question i have is how can i teach him to talk? the pet store owner told me he has the ability to talk but nothing yet. he's about 5 months old and I'm pretty sure hes a boy as the pet store owner said.

Thank you

  1. Some birds just don't end up talking. It's perfectly normal. Take the bird out every day by gently placing your finger into the cage. If it flies, don't grab for it, just try again. You probably already know how to pick it up, so follow those steps. Do this once a day for a short period of time (or twice) and soon he will feel more comfortable. To teach a bird to talk, take is into a small quiet room for a while once a day, and repeat a single word to him. Soon, he will learn it, and, after a few more words, will be able to mimic things he hears around the house. If there is a mirror in your bird cage, consider only giving it to him for a treat, or maybe when you go on vacation. The bird can become more interested in his mirror than you. Never, ever punish your bird or scold him. This will make him be scared around you. Always when you return it to a cage, praise it with a scratch on the head, a favorite toy, kind words, or an occasional  treat. Hope I helped!

  2. Cocktails require lots of care, I would suggest looking up all the info you can on these birds. I do however know that they need to be let out everyday for at least an hour a day. They also must be fed a good diet and many commercial foods are not all too healthy for them as they contain lots of sunflower seeds. in addition you need a proper cage. All of these things will contribute to your pets behavior.

Many cocktails  will not speak some choose to just whistle songs and tunes.

  3. First of the bird doesn't trust you. IMHO you should never stick your hand in a cage to get a bird out. You should have a dowel that you can make the bird step up on and then brought out of the cage. That is his domain an you need to make him your friend and not his enemy.

Figure out what his favorite food is. Use this to entice the bird to eat out of your fingers. After a few weeks of that you will see a big difference. I only feed sunflower to my cockatiels as a treat to make them do what I want. It takes time and patience to gain a birds trust. You don't know what that bird has been through. A lot of birds will go to a man or a woman and prefer their company. If you want a bird for you go to the pet shop and let a cockatiel pick you out. If you can look around on the Internet and find a breeder then you will find a baby.

  4. my cockatiel is currently sitting on my shoulder and eating my earrings

you have to be SUPER nice to him

if it's a boy it'll learn to talk quicker than girls

girls don't really talk. you just have to keep saying the same thing over and over to him and then it gets the idea

then it'll stick in it's stupid brain

but the best trick to getting your bird to like you is getting sunflower seeds

and giving it sunflower seeds one by one

    it'll love you

or you nudge it's little orange cheek with your knuckle

but if i doesn't like you then it probably won't let you do it

argh. don't get it to love you too much

when you get it out of it's cage it flies straight to you and you're like ARGH! FVCK OFF!

  5. All you have to do is to show that your not going to harm him and let him get adapted to your house do not take him out of his cage forced if you do then he will just feel scared.

  6. take your cockatiels food away and feed it by your hand every day and that should work.
