  1. You could create a website as well for yourself and encourage the community to utilize it.  Social networking is a hot tool in today's busy world and it might get the point across to your target audience.  I understand some older folks don't use the internet frequently or don't have access at home so I would suggest pitching this theme in a town hall meeting where they are likely to go and encourage them to check it out at their local library where they can access the internet for free.  I believe this would be an effective tool plus it could reduce the waste on distributing fliers and other printable items to get the point across.

  2. Start or encourage people to recycle metal, glass, paper and plastic

Encourage local supermarkets to give discounts to people who bring their own bags

Collect leaves for composting that could be given/sold to local gardeners

Create park-n-ride areas to foster carpooling -- Use coupons for parking discounts, use established parking lots as meeting places.

Create an inexpensive winterizing kit for homes with weatherstripping, plastic sheeting, sample energy efficient bulbs that could be distributed through community organizations to seniors and the disadvantaged.

  3. Check out freecyle.org... it's a worldwide network of Yahoo groups where members post messages offering items for free that would normally end up in the landfill.  This is a fun way to recycle and get free stuff too!
