How can i get a drivers license in CA? I need 2 drive 2 college 40 min. away, got my permit 2 months ago.?

Im gonna be18 yrs in January and will finish my six months in december, however that means i dont have a way to get to college for my first quarter. I've heard of a provisional license where you can get a drivers license before you finish ur six months and before you turn 18. I've also heard that the DMV could cut down a few months for you if you show them that you need to drive somewhere like school or work. Is this true or not? i went to the dmv and they told me a provisional licence can be attained if i finish six months on my permit or turn 18 first. I dont know what to do now.

You have to wait the whole 6 months, they will not cut any out.  But after 6 months, if you have a Drivers Training behind the wheel completion form, then you can go ahead and take your driving test.

If you did not take the behind the wheel training, and don't plan to, then you will have to wait until you are 18 (which is close to the 6 month mark anyway...)

By the way, my first sentence is generally true, but there are always possibilities of getting around restrictions.  But it can be difficult, and take a long time.  It involves petitioning DMV headquarters in Sacramento with your request, outlining why you should get what you want, that there are no alternatives, and so on, and so forth.  It is possible, I have seen it happen before, but it is often a lesson in futility.

None of what you have heard is true.  You need to either turn 18 or wait 6 months, no exceptions.  The only way around it is an extreme situation like if your parents are both disabled and you're the only driver in the family or something like that.  Look into public transportation or see if your college has a vanpool or carpool program.  Most bigger colleges have them.
