  1. Go to the Coast Guard web site and follow the procedure to have your boat Federally Documented.

  2. Call the DNR or whatever agency handles the registration explain the situation and get an answer.

  3. contact the COAST GUARD

  4. Boats built before 1972 were not required to have a HIN.  You can register your boat as a pre-1972 boat without a HIN.  You can also register you're boat as homemade.  In either case most states will assign you a HIN.

Will give you warning though, registering a newer factory built boat as either is a common way to clean a title for a stolen boat, so be prepared if you do this to prove ownership if asked.

  5. Call the office where you get registration renewed on boats in your area.  For us in TX, it's TX Parks and Wildlife.  Other states call it Fish & Game.  Some states do it through the same office as the motor vehicle registration, or your local tax assessor/collector.  Call the office and ask them what paperwork you will need to complete and what information to bring.  The website below if for IL Dep. of Natural Resources.  It may tell you what you need to know.

  6. Get a bill of sale.   That helped me.  With a ser.# and a bill of sale you should be able to get your boat registered.

  7. Old boats had plates that were riveted on the transom yrs of corrosion and there gone> Call the tag agency>The owner who name the title is in will have to do this>>??
