Check with your state for gun laws.

You must be 21 to carry a handgun. You will need to take a gun safety course. And more then likely submit to a background check from your local law enforcement. You will get a background check again when you go to purchase a handgun.

Are you just wanting to carry a gun? If so I would think that you could just carry it, unless you want to carry a concealed weapon. Then you have to get the correct permits.

Also, realize that just because you can carry one, doesn't mean you can carry it everywhere. Specifically, you can't carry one into a bank, bar or government office. I think there are a few other places, but I don't recall. Also, if a store stops you at the door and says you can't wear a gun inside, then you can't wear a gun inside since the store is private property.
