Shop as far in advance as possible - opt for connections such as

through Chicago(ORD) or Denver(DEN) and fly on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Also, shop for fares on-line just after midnight when seat inventory comes back from folks that let go of "held" reservations.  A lot of "deals" are usually announced on Wednesdays, early.

It seems Saturday night stays are coming back too.  So staying over night on Saturday and going home on Monday or Tuesday is cheaper than Sunday travel.

Kayak.com has a pretty good format for shopping comparable fares - then go direct to the carriers website to book for the guaranteed best deal.
