  1. If you have a copy of your most recent prescription and it's less than a year old, you can take it into any optical that fits contacts and get it done. That is all a lot of doctors will give you, just the eyeglass prescription only. They will generally tell you if you are a candidate for contact lens use, but that's it. The person doing the fitting will convert it into what you need for contacts after taking the other necessary measurements.

The only time you cannot do this is when you try to order on-line. You will need to have a fitting done and the prescription filled out for exactly what you need for contacts.

  2. You have to have a special contacts prescription since they have to measure the curves of your eyes and everything.  it's about $100 where i live.  They combine the lense specifications and the eye measurements so they fit and work right.

  3. Legally, no can do. In the US, you are required by law to have a contact lens script from an eye doctor.

  4. You can't...

  5. you can't as glasses are a distance from your eye so they are differant to contacts that sit on your eye

  6. Even though ABO (American Board of Opticians) laws can be slightly different from state to state I doubt you will find anyone that will sell you contact lenses without a valid CL R/X.  In California most Optometrist will fit you with lenses if your eye glass R/X is less that 6 months old but some Dr.s will require they give you an eye exam before they will fit you with CL's.  They will give you many reasons for not wanting to use another Dr's eyeglass R/X or one that older than six months as a starting point for a CL fitting and their reasoning is valid but what they really want is your money.  If you have been seeing the same Optometrist or Ophthalmologist and you trust them you should talk to them about your wish to try contact lenses.  They will be honest in telling you if you are a good candidate for contact lenses because the last thing they want is to try and fit a person who is a bad candidate.  The main reason you can't use your glasses R/X is contacts come in different curvatures and diameters and there are so many different lenses made by many different manufactures so the dispenser would not know what lens to sell you without a proper fitting from an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist.  If you care to ask any questions I will be happy to help.
