How can i get directions on getting somewhere through public transportation? I need some type of guide?

that will tell me what buses or trains I would need to take and where to take them at,, where to get off.. e.t.c.... Ive never had to take the train before but my new job will be downtown so I need all this help figuring out how to get there. please help!
