  1. That is the purpose of finalizing a disc.  However, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM cannot be finalized - so if you're using those disc types you can only play them back in other units that specify they are compatible with that disc.  But, even with finalization - there is never a 100% guarantee that the disc will work with another device.  That is not the fault of the recorder manufacturer - it's just currently how things are.  There are no industry standards on DVD media - only private standards.  Companies who make recorders have to jump through hoops to try and make their units as cross-compatible as possible with others.  This is something that cannot be avoided.

  2. On my Sony DVD recorder I had the same problem.

    If I used a DVD-R and recorded a movie I could not

play it on another Sony DVD player in our living room.

Then I discovered that unless you "finalyze" the DVD

after recording it it will only play on the player which

    recorded it.

Oddly that doesn't happen if you record the movie using

a DVD-RW.  I can take that disk in and play it without

having to finalyze it.  So, check your manual to find out

about finalyzing the disk.  Am sure that will solve your

    problem.

    Hope this helps you.
