Back when I graduated High School (2005) I saw "The Deadliest Catch" on the Discovery Channel. The Momment I watched the deckhands go at it I couldnt hide my enthusiasm. The feel of the boat on the ocean being tossed up and down, the team work involved in it, it mezmerized me. But, I went to college, came home, got decent job, and have kinda been here ever since. Ive researched the subjuct a little in my spare time but never found anything concrete. Does anyone know how I could find employment on a boat as a deckhand.... or a green horn at the least?

It should be noted that my enthusiasm had hit a peak before I learned of the "potential" money involved in it.

  1. You are not alone. Half the kids that watch that show think it looks cool to be a watermen.  Well its not.  It is hard, often boring work, oh, and dangerous too.  You wont get rich, or have a retirement plan.

Have you ever even been in the ocean? or on any boat for that matter?

  2. The below websight will give you some good advice.

I you get a chance, you should go visit Alaska first.

  3. Swim around in the Bearing Sea and wait to be picked up.Then while on board...show 'em what you can do!

  4. Check the want ads for the Alaska fishing industry, also the Washington State work source web site.  Most of the AK fleet is based in Seattle and they hire many in the Seattle area.  What skills do you have?  Are you in good physical condition?

  5. from my recollection of the series you mention, those that get picked up for the work hang out round the ports, keep their ears open (probably in the bars) and pick up on the local recruitment that goes on. Kodiak might be a good place to try.
