My budgie is a male and he is about six months old and from a pet store. I have only had him for 5 weeks and he fly's away from my hand when i put it in his cage to try and get him to step up. He has stepped up before but only when he is out of his cage and on a perch he wont do it when hes on the ground he will just run away. So how can i get him to trust me and to let me put my hand in his cage

  1. sorry i really don't know the answer to your question but i want to ask you a question it must be so cute when he runs away how to you catch him (remember budgies like sunflower seeds, whole grain cheerios and raisins.

  2. It is important for the parakeet to think his cage is very safe. They usually get difficult when they think their cage is safe(that might be why he is avoiding you in his cage). Parakeets also don't like to be down low and they especially don't like when some thing big looms over them. Try backing up intil he hops higher, then try to get him. Of course, they always would like seeds.

  3. put some seed or a bird treat in your hand and hold it in the cage. Wait for him to come to you. It might take a long time but he has to learn to trust you slowly.
