I am bi-polar. I have not been on medication in over a year because i can't get medical insurance. my husband doesn't understand it when i have the mood swings and depressions, and thinks it's a personality defect i need to overcome.

i tell him that i need medication to help, and he always says "no, you don't. you're just being selfish. you could help it if you tried."

how can i get him to understand?

  1. first you tell him about it. then you hit him on the head with something to knock him out. then when he wakes up be as sweet as pie to him like nothing ever happened..maybe then he would understand "sigh". men...so stubborn.

  2. Honestly speaking drugs make you weak. Don't be dependent of them.

  3. honey, he doesn't want to understand.  bipolar disorder is well documented, and if he can't take the time to educate himself about his own wife's disorder, then I would say he isn't much of a husband.  You could try getting some informational brochures for him to look at...but don't count on it doing much good...once a jerk, always a jerk.

  4. there's no real way to get him to completely understand unless he had the disorder too. show him what you told us. maybe he'll understand

  5. Here is a great site with information for people who live with someone suffering from bipolar disorder.

    http://www.helpguide.org/mental/bipolar_...

Information is the key to understanding.  Unfortunately, it is hard for others to understand.  I had the same issues with my family and getting them to understand my bipolar.  I finally asked them that if I was paralysed, would you tell me to "walk it off"?  They were a bit shocked but then finally began to understand.  Mental illness is still an illness, but it is hard to understand and accept.

You need to get back on your meds and maybe look into some counselling for both of you.

    Best of luck to you!

  6. Beatle fan.. ALERT.. you can TELL YOUR LOCAL PHARMACY that you need pharmacy assistance.. you can also call the drug manufacturer of your psych med and tell them you need them .. and get them for free..

Please get back on your medication and have your husband go to the therapist with  you or with out you to explain whats happening. YOu have to take responsibility if you stop your care.. PLEASE GET YOUR FREE OR LOW COST MEDS.. NOW..

Ask your Dr what the pharmecuetical company is that makes your drug so you can call them today.

  7. Get him some literature about the condition to read.  Men don't understand illnesses very well unless they are the ones that are sick.  My husband was so unfeeling and cruel when I got sick that he left me.  I have multiple sclerosis.  He just couldn't deal with the situation.  Now, I thank God he is gone.  I didn't need him anyway.

You can look up bipolar disorder on the computer and copy the material for him to read.  I hope he thinks enough of you to at least read the information and try to understand.  If you have a public health department in your county, you can go there and get medication for free.
