  1. I'm laughing at the idea of a calm Jack Russell!  =-)  My brother has one and I don't think he'll calm down until he's past age six.

He needs mental exercise so he won't entertain himself so much.

He needs physical exercise so he'll calm down for short periods of time.

They're smart dogs...teach him a few things that involve running.

  2. ...just give him time. give him a whole load of exercise too. just take him to a park and let him off him lead.

jack russels are wonderfully loyal and well behaved as in they will follow you about and if you do let him off in the park they wont just run away but god they are crazy

  3. Dogs will be dogs. And don't try to force a Jack to calm down, they have teeth ya know

  4. I have two jacks one twenty years old and she still has her daft moments the other is ten a calmer quieter dog.they are the attention seekers of the dog world and like to be busy i give them a chew when people come in to the house to give them something else to focus on.They need lots of walks to tire them out. If you think a jack Russell is bad we also have a patter dale terrier a year old this is a dog with real get up and go hyperactive is the word for her but a great little character.

  5. My friend has this problem, to be honest, i think all jack russell's are hyper, but when someone is coming over, put him on a lead and hold him untill he has settled down, then eventually he should settle down. hope i helped, good luck! :) x

  6. The only way to resolve the problem when someone comes to the house is to complete the lessons of command and be sure that the dog execute them all the time.

After you will use the command down( not the command seat) and you continue with the command stay.......

    Good luck.

  7. I wish I knew the answer.  I had a JR for 17 years and I think he calmed down when he was about 12 although he was always busy, busy, busy right up until a few months before he died.

It's just part of a Jack's character, I guess.  You either love 'em or you hate 'em. lol!

  8. Before you let your visitors in, put your JR into another room. Leave him there for a few minutes before you let him out. Go into the room, tell him to sit and give him a fairly large treat, or perhaps a bone if he is allowed them and let him take this into the room where your visitors are. The time in the other room will have calmed him down and he will be occupied with his treat. Tell your visitors to ignore him if he approaches them and if possible turn their backs.

About an hour before you go to bed, take him into the garden and play with him. Look on the Internet at heel work to music moves, some of them are very easy if you use treats. Mental exercise is more tiring than physical exercise and it will calm him down. If he will fetch a ball, make him do something before you throw it, use the ball as a reward. Don't forget to take him out later for his last pees and poos.

  9. Call Victoria Stillwell

  10. take him to an enclosed area to just play, play fetch or take it swimming.

  11. If you know ahead of time that someone is coming over, take him for a long tiring walk...then when they get there, he'll be too tired to jump and yap.

  12. Oh god I adopted one of these cute little terrorists ( he's actually a Jack/Chi) from the pound as a companion to my 6 year old mellow calm mild mannered dachshund and he terrorizes my poor baby and just bounces and oh god I wasn't ready for this and I've had all kinds of dogs all my life! I'm about to rehome him to my neighbor who has a hyper dachshund/Beagle because he's isn't a good match for me, or my dachshund, we're both very laid back and he just doesn't fit our lifestyle, especially when i'm taking 15 hours of classes and working full time this semester, hence me trying to find a mellow friend for my baby while I'm gone so he won't be lonely. When I take peter pan (Jack / Chi ) to the dog park he can run for 5 hours non stop full speed running circles around huge racing grey hounds who are already far past worn out and tired. He has more stamina than all his big dog friends there, even the dalmations and pointers who are very hyper and have longer legs, and he's only HALF  jack russell so. .. I think it's impossible they never stop moving! (he'll be happier with my neighbor and her beagle/dach)
