How can i get rid of a rat in the ceiling boards in my basement?

there is rat in the ceiling boards in the basement, i can hear it moving around and i saw it once. Any products i can use to get rid of it? i don't want to kill it just chase it away because i don't want a dead body to deal with. Are there any products that i can buy that will chase the rat away? and how well does the product work? Help please

set traps in attic they do climb and bat it with cheese or peanut butter check trap daily they will smell if you dont and its traped

1 rat is usually an indication of 8 or more rats.  They breed like crazy and have liters with 10 or more.  It's very unlikely that you'll be able to get rid of them yourself.  Having seen the rat is a sign that the rat has been there for a long time and is comfortable with your various noises and is a bad sign.  Lack of fear means they have been there for awhile.

get rat poison and it will dry the animal up and no stink.

One word, Decon!  That's a mouse/rat poison you can buy.  It dries up the body so it doesn't stink on ya!
