  1. if outside use gas

  2. It's become an annual rite of spring that we have ants in our kitchen.  First thing is clean your house thoroughly, mainly removing the food.  That means food in the carpet, and on floors and other surfaces.

Also clean up your microwave and sink, and don't leave dirty dishes in the sink, or in the dishwasher.  Clean as soon as you can.

Then, natural ant deterrents include bay leaves and cinnamon.  Also, boric acid, as contained in borax, is effective.  It's the ingredient used in our favorite ant killer, Terro, which is an inexpensive solution dropped on strips of paper.

The ants love the Terro.  You'll see dozens of then gorging on the stuff.  You'll be tempted to throw the strip away when it's covered in ants, but don't.  Just let them eat, and keep putting them out until they're gone.  It may take a week or two but eventually they'll be gone.

Just remember, the ants you see really aren't the problem.  They have short life spans.  What you want is to kill off the queen(s) and the rest of the colony.  Then there won't be any new ants to contend with.

Cut off their food supply, use the bay leaves as a deterrent, and use Terro to kill off the remainder.  Always works for us.

  3. Good luck with home remedy solutions...  I am sure that you "can " get rid of ants with enough gas... it might be possible to kill them with borax... but I don't see any professionals using this stuff.

Get some good ole maxforce ant bait for $20 or less.  Its what the pros use and so should you.

FYI- Different ants eat different things.  Some ants eat grains and some ants eat sugars... Harvester ants eat sugars half the year  and grains the other half. The best solution is going to be figuring out what ants you are dealing with first then getting a prescription solution.

  4. From what i've experienced (having to get rid of ants for a government run mental care facility), there are 2 kinds of food ants eat, sugar based, and protein based.  ants are attracted to one or the other, seldom both.

Borax soap is the "magical ingredient" in everyday ant bait traps.  mixing this with peanut butter (protein) or jelly (sugar) will attract them, and trick them into eating it.

ants will eat as much as they can, and return to the colony, where they will regurgitate to feed the queen, and remainder of the colony.  this is what you want!

anyways, borax is common, as are the 2 other ingredients!
