Question:

How can i get rid of fleas! Dog and cat?

I have 3 dogs and 2 cats, as u can imagine i've spent a small fortune on flea treatments. The only thing i haven't used is 'Frontline' which a vet recommended, reason being it's £15.00 per animal which kis too expensive for me. Is there a cheaper alternative?. I don't have carpets in my home, i wash animal bedding frequently, all animals have flea collars, they are washed in flea shampoo and sprayed with flea sprays, i've also tryed 'spot on' to no avail!

  1. I've just been to the vet today and she told me that flea collars don't work well at all, spot on treatments are ok but most are just cr*p, especially the over the counter ones. If something works it basically HAS to be prescription. And most spot ons are just flea REPELLANT, in other words once you HAVE fleas they don't work anymore.

You need something that kills the fleas and stops the life cycle. (you probably know about the whole flea --> egg --> larvae --> flea cycle already) My vet today said the ONLY proper flea killer and life cycle preventer is PROGRAM injectible. He injects your pet with it every 6 months and the magic is: any flea that sucks your treated pets blood will only lay infertile eggs from now on! (you probably also know that fleas prefer your pets to your human blood 100 times).

Check out http://www.fleafree.co.uk for more info, but believe me: all the soaps, powders, collars and spot on treatments in the world are nothing compared to this treatment.

  2. get a comb and search thru their fur and anytime u find a flea, take it out on the comb, and kill it with ur nail.

  3. type in frontline youll get it cheaper online especially if you buy a few packs-expensive i know but its the only thing thats ever worked for my pets-its not 15 an animal as you get 3 vials in a pack which will treat 3 animals-good luck

  4. You simply HAVE to us either Frontline, or Advantage. They ARE expensive, but it's the ONLY way you are going to solve the problem. Flea collars, sprays, and shampoo's are a waste of time, and money, as fleas don't live on the animals, they only jump on to feed, and lay eggs, ( which incidentally fall off as the animal moves around your home) and don't need to travel to the neck area to feed, so don't neccessarily come into contact with flea collars.

Most fleas live around your house, in the sofa, in cracks in the flooring,  and they are tiny enough to find a good home in the smallest cracks anywhere in your home.

To truly understand the way fleas live, and thrive, have a look at this link.http://www.placervillevet.com/flea_life_...

For goodnes sake, Ivory dish soap?? Are you going to treat every nook and cranny in your home with Ivory dish soap? It may well kill the few fleas that just happen to be on board at the time of half drowning your poor pet, but as soon as the animal is dry, 20 more fleas have jumped aboard for supper, had a bit of "nooky" and created another 500 beautiful bouncing baby fleas.

I'm sure some people on here mean well, but there is plenty of good information on flea repellant, and treatment on the internet, and there is no need for you, or your pets to suffer in ignorance, and if you choose to own 5  "flea factories"  you owe it to them to keep them healthy. Spending money on powders, shampoo's and flea collars is false economy, you have to invest in the best treatment possible, which is Frontline or Advantage, or one of the equally expensive treatments Cocoa mentions.

  5. get a comb and search thru their fur and anytime u find a flea, take it out on the comb, and kill it with ur nail.

frontline is really good,,i used it to my dogs..the problem is it is expensive,,it could either be in a spray form or a spot on,,spot on is best to prevent fleas for months..it could last up to six months,,the best way to use spot on is to not bathe your dog for a week then put the spot on then not bathe the dogs for another week,,that way it is more effective,,anyway..try ASUNTOL..you use it on the final rinsing of your pets after giving them a bath,,it would kill fleas...

Frontline probably is the best around, but as you said, the most expensive. We use Stronghold on our two cats, and it works well. Hope this helps xx

Ivory dishsoap. The little buggers can tread water, however, the dishsoap changes the consistency of the water and drowns them.

Note: This will NOT kill the eggs. A good flea powder will take care of that and should also help with the eggs left on your pet.

A good "trap" for fleas is to get a pie pan and put water in it about halfway. Two or three drops of Ivory dishsoap right in the middle and then hang a light over the water maybe six to eight inches above the pan.

The fleas will jump at the light (just like moths who try to fly to it) and fall down after they hit it. They will land in the Ivoried water and the little bloodsucking pests will die.

I had the same problem last year no matter what I use in flea shampoo I could not kill all of them they wouldn't even drown it's because they weren't regular dog fleas so I asked my vet he told me Pert Plus and it worked but I never use a flea collar because they only work around the head and I use Pet Meds the one from tv It was a whole lot cheaper to get the flea meds you need. I wash my dog about once a week with it and it smells a whole lot better than the flea shampoos you buy also if you have fabric couches vacuum them also the fleas can hide in them. Hope this helps

Frontline is good, so I've heard.

Just because you don't have carpets, doesn't mean their not in your bed, or sofa, and stuff like that, so de-flea everything.

  11. frontline is the only thing that is going to work im afraid, if u stop buying the other sprays and the collars-as they dont work then the money you save can go frontline, they sell it in some chemists now too so it might be a bit cheaper there, u also need a house spray like VETKEM this is also from a vets but works very well, if u treat the animals but not the house then the eggs that the fleas have layed will just hatch and the whole cycle will start again thus costing more money
