  1. English ivy?  Sever the stems at soil level, then paint the stump that's left with an herbicide that will translocate to the roots.

Glyphosate is commonly used in the US for that purpose (it has to be applied within a few minutes of cutting of the stem), but I'm not sure what's available in the UK.  Or you can simply continue to cut the new sprouts from the roots, once a week. Either way, you're going to have to strip the plants off the brickwork... they don't weather off very well.

  2. I dont understand why cutting the roots would damage  the brickwork as it has already done that cut it off at the root and it will die, you then need to kill the root with weed killer.Go into a garden centre and ask a gardening expetrt for the bet one to detroy the root.  The leaves will die off but you will be left with the stem and shoots going up the wall pull off what is safe to remove and leave the rest. good luck

  3. You could try a weedkiller called Roundup but be very careful not to get it on any other plants as you will lose them too.  It may take three or four applications but should work in the end.  Just follow the instructions on the bottle.

  4. Roundup (glyphosate) is the chemical herbicide I would use. If you're worried about toxicity, then maybe horticulture vinegar. I've never used it but it's apparently a 20% mixture of acetic vinegar vs. the 5% stuff for home consumption.

What you can do is cut all the stems coming up from the roots at about a 2 feet level leaving some ivy leafs alive. Anything above will die. Spray the Roundup onto the live leafs as that's how it works. It should kill everything within 72 hours and you can remove the dead material. Watch for new shoots coming up and just re-apply the roundup every few weeks, this should permanently remove all your ivy.

  5. To get rid of the ivy, you have to cut it off at the roots, and dig the roots out, then put diluted bleach into a bucket and spread it over the area where the roots are. The ivy will then begin to die off. Cutting the roots will not damage the brickwork, but if you don't the ivy will damage your brickwork a lot more.

  6. Cut its water supply off and let it die back.

  7. cut the plant as near to the ground as possible then the ivy will die off and all you have to do then is prise off the dead ivy very carefully as it will have anchored itself onto the brickwork.

  8. Cut the main stem(s) as close to the ground as possible.Chop around the roots with a sharp spade,(Mind your toes!).

Buy a pack of Sodium Chlorate weedkiller, easily obtainable and apply as instructed, noting that this weedkiller will kill all plants.

Let the ivy on the wall die off, when it's brown and crisp it'll pull off easily.

  9. Get a goat!  It will keep it trimmed down to the bare ground.
