  1. You take Caltrain or VTA light rail to the Cahill St. Amtrak station.   From there you take

    - Amtrak's Coast Starlight straight to downtown L.A. Union Station.  This is a very pretty and deluxe ride, with dining cars and a big wraparound-glass lounge car, whole nine yards.

    - Either the Amtrak Capitol train or a bus over to the Amtrak San Joaquin train to Bakersfield, where you connect to Amtrak buses that go all over the L.A. region.  One of them goes to LA Union Station.

At LA Union Station you can connect to the subway or a variety of other trains that go all over the greater L.A. basin, anywhere you want to go, from Palmdale to Oceanside, from Malibu to San Berdoo.

  2. Amtrak has a number of options:

direct train once per day and various bus + train combinations.
