I got a speeding ticket, nothing major, but I don't have the money to pay for the fine at all. Does anyone know how I can possibly get the amount reduced? I just moved to California and don't know how their traffic court works.

  1. Go in and talk to the court clerk and speak to them.  Alot of judges will reduce a fine if you plead guilty or no contest so as to not take up the courts time, the traffic judge in your area may be one of them.  You will also be able to set up a payment plan if you are unable to pay the fine all at once.  Depending on the speed you were cited for you may also be able to go to traffic school and get the ticket off your record so it won't hurt your insurance.

  2. Yes there are several ways to get your ticket dismissed or the amount reduced. You would need to contest the ticket and request the court appearance. Then look for advice on how to deal with the court on the blog  spot below.

  3. Traffic fines in California are set state-wide as a matter of Court rule through the Judicial Council and in the form of, "Rule 4.102. UNIFORM BAIL AND PENALTY SCHEDULES."

That rule establishes the fines for traffic violations and while I suppose a judge might be allowed to decrease the fines, I doubt it's going to happen.  There's a school of thought that says if you can afford to speed, you should be able to afford to pay the fine for it.

All that aside, payment plans are allowed.  The court will add a small amount for what amounts to "loan maintenance" but the State wants your money and they're willing to work with you to get it.
