Its going to be her first time on a plane, and my second...and im aware that chewing gum works, but im not all that crazy in giving her gum.

She doesnt use a pacifier, and stopped taking a bottle....what other options do i have, and will they really work?

  1. How about sugar-free gum?  I know you don't think it's best for her to have it, but in this case, it will really help.  I cant think of anything else that will help, because you would need her to understand what to do to make her ears pop.

You could try to get her to understand that yawning will help, I guess.

Also, you want them to pop, its the pressure of not popping that causes pain.

  2. my mom gave me juice boxes

  3. if you give her a hard boiled sweet and tell her to suck it really works. also make sure you have plenty of water to swallow. it works really well

    :)

  4. how about have a sucker kind of candy to give her for when the plain is taking off and landing.

possibly a ring pop, push pop, or plain old sucker.

That way she gets the sucking motion.

Also, just tell her that her ears might pop. She'll probably be scared at first because it is surprising, but just be an example (mommy's ears popped too! It's because we're flying on top of the world, it's okay)

  5. You actually want her ears to pop. That equalizes the pressure on her eardrums so they don't hurt. The best thing you can do is give her some water to sip on. The swallowing can help keep her ears clear. There are additional tips at the link below. Good luck!

  6. hard candies and gum are choking hazards, so stay away from those. drinking or eating during take offs and landings will help (anything that will make her swallow)

try to keep it healthy...you don't want her to have a sugar high on a plane! lol. also, since she'll be drinking/ eating, she'll need to use the potty often. try to get a an aisle seat fairly close to the bathrooms.

also, try to see if you can get her to pinch and blow her nose...you probably know it's a good trick to pop your ears, but I'm not sure if she's old enough to get the concept. present it like a game..."Look what Mommy can do! Now you try it."

  7. Suckers, lollys, mints, a sippy cup, or gum if you want to tust your 2 year old with it. Thats all i know of best of luck.

  8. My daughter travelled on a plane at 10mths and 13mths old and didn't show any signs of concern over popping ears. My advice though is just to offer a drink at that time as the drinking is the same as sucking.

  9. well, whenever that happens to me I pinch my nose and blow out and you can also cup your ears, that usually helps a lot.

  10. When you start to take off, if she listens pretty well, have her start drinking water out of a bottled water. Just the swalloing will do the trick! Make sure she does it when you come down too, that is always the worst for me. If you can, don't drug her persay, but maybe you can give her some benidril to help her zone out? Not a full dose like when she needs it, but enough that she will be sleepy and sleep through it.

  11. I am a flight attendant, give her a sippy cup with something to drink---keep her swallowing, even little goldfish crackers somthing small that she can chew and swallow pretty quickly, you will only have to worry about it during the first few minutes of take off and the last few minutes before you land.  Try and teach her to yawn when you tell her to before you leave that will also open up her ears if the pop---big yawns!  You can try earplugs also but most kids won't leave them in and they don't work real great but it may help.  Good luck and remember if it doesn't work and she cries it is probably bothering you more then anyone else so don't stress.

  12. Ask your pediatrician if it would be appropriate to pre-medicate your child with Benadryl. Ours recommended it, and it was quite helpful.

  13. mints or lollipops, anything you can suck on

it really does work, i ahve ben on a plane 10+ times and it really works

  14. Not sure if you can teach her to do it....

Pinch your nose and try to blow air out through your nose and it equalizes the pressure somehow.

  15. A lollipop for her to suck on. When my sister was 6, still too young for gum, mum gave her a lollie to suck. Obviously being 2, that would be dangerous, so give her a lollipop :)

  16. tell her to yawn works for me

  17. chewy snacks.  anything where the chewing motion can help pop her ears and releive pressure.
