How can i improve my singing voice?

i really want to do community theater, i can act and dance, i just can't sing. besides using youtube videos, how can i improve my singing voice. i sing terribly and i can't afford singing lessons. i have a keyboard, but i wouldn't even know where to begin. what are some exercises that i can do to make myself sound less like a cat when i'm singing. help!!!

*Take choir in school (if you are in school)

*Ask the Musical Directors in the community theatre to work with you on your singing

*If you can't afford voice lessons, find a voice teacher that will work with you and a friend at the same time. You and the friend can split the cost and it will be cheaper.

*Practice!

You have to listen and sing to many different CD. Why? So that you can develop your ear and your rhythm. Also, it will help you get good timing which is essential.
