  1. leg strength increases vertical jumping ability

do lots of squats, power cleans, and calf raises

  2. Hi - In college I had a 36" vertical jump.  There are 2 factors - form and strength.

To get the most out of your jump, you need to practice the 3 step approach.  It's not just your legs, it's getting low on the second step and swinging your arms upward to generate momentum as you jump to get the maximum height.

Also with the 3 step approach, you need to be able to convert the forward motion into upward motion.  To do this, practice plyometrics (google it or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plyometrics...  A workout we used to do was to jump off of a box and then spring back up in the air.

The more you jump the better you will get.  A good exercise is to set a basketball rim to 9' or 9.5' and just keep dunking the basketball as many times in a row as you can.

    Good Luck.

  3. There is no easy answer to this.  I am guessing if your vertical isn't up to ten feet you are still young so as you mature it will slowly increase with strength.  If you are young then HEAVY weight training could even be bad for you however I will say that everything you need to know about increasing your vertical can be found in a book called "The Vertical Jump Bible" and it does work.  It takes a lot of work and a lot of jumping all the time to increase your vertical so good luck.
