  1. In addition to Luci's answer, which is a great one, btw!

You can also consider planting large trees and shrubs around your home to create shading, and a form of insulation.

The trees and foliage around your home will shade it and keep it cooler in the summer and will shield your home from high winds and the cold in the winter.

Power House TV states that "one well-placed tree can lower your summer air conditioning bills by 25 percent!"*

You will, however, have to keep up with the pruning of the trees, particularly dead and dying branches especially if you live in an area that experiences hurricaines.

  2. Instead of insulation, you might try working with air currents.

When it is cool in the mornings open all windows, then for when the afternoon heat comes, open a window (or make an opening) in the top of the house to let out hot air, and close windows on the ground floor, but allow cool air from the basement to rise up into the house.  Covering the windows will also keep the hot  air and sunlight from entering during the hot part of the day.

Planting trees around the house will help cool it, and if your house can be covered in ivy -- that acts as a natural insulation.

  3. insulator xD

  4. Listen to Luci.

And consider making it all happen with a whole house fan that can draw in the cool night air and exhaust the warm air int he house.

  5. Window tinting

  6. Just keep the house dark

  7. My super ghetto solution: Glue thin sheets of styrofoam to cardboard and put them over windows. Both block heat transfer well.

  8. yeah, go with the tree idea.

this way you can keep the airflow to prevent fungal allergens and still enjoy 5-10 degree cooler temps

this is one of those..."what keeps you warm in the winter keeps you cool in the summer ideas, since they will also reduce wind chill by blocking the wind during colder seasons.
