Yahoo invites have been glitchy for months on end, as well as hotmail users don't get them at all. you're better off sending the direct link of your group in an e-mail, providing your group doesn't have closed membership

Just include the person's name along with others in the group email invite and say "I thought you might be interested to join our group" or something else.

You won't know if the person is interested until you try, so just do it.
