I'm making a knife out of a railroad spike, but every time I work on it by the next day it's rusty again. Also if you have any more tips, feel free because i'm just a novice.

  1. Well, I know nothing about knives, but I love to cook on cast iron...so I can help!

Before cooking with a new cast iron pan, you season it to keep it from rusting.

Rub it with lard or bacon grease.  Put it in a pre-heated oven at 250-300 degrees for 2-3 hours.  Repeating the process will build up a nice protective (black) oil finish that will last.

While you are still working on the knife, you may use any type of oil to discourage rust.  You won't want to bake on a seasoned finish until you are finished with the knife.

:) Hope this helps!  Sounds like a cool project.

  2. Rub some oil (e.g., 3-in-1) on it before you put it away.

  3. keep it out of humid areas and water

  4. oil it every day and then when finished get it galvanised or sm thing 2 protect it in sm sort of way....
