  1. Bring a textbook on statistics and probability in education and philosophy. You'll either enjoy it or fall right asleep.

  2. Bring books and magazines.

    iPod if you have one.

  3. Take a book you've been wanting to read for ages - this is your chance to enjoy it.

I've flown from London to Australia non-stop apart from plane changes and you do find things to occupy yourself.

There should be a film which you may enjoy watching.

Then there are meal times.  Find someone to chat to - you could make a friend for life, and on these long trips, people do get to be quite willing to talk to strangers.

Long-haul flights are usually overnighters, so some of the time will pass while you get a chance to sleep.

Extra room in suitcase?  I often put things in "Zip lock" plastic bags - you press all the air out and before they have chance to fill up again - zip the top back together.  Surprising how much they flatten down.  You can also buy larger plastic bags which are equipped to enable you to suck out all the air with a cleaner - the problem with those is that they might put creases in your clothes.  Wear your heaviest shoes to the airport and pack the flat light-weight ones like flip flops (or do you call them thongs as the Australians do?).

If you are taking a jumper and a jacket - tuck the jumper sleeves into the jacket, so that it becomes a lining, and carry that over your arm - saves space in your case.

I came back from Italy 3 weeks ago - Lake Garda, Verona and Venice;  it was very, very hot and very humid in Venice.

Have a lovely time and think of your flights as an interesting part of your holiday.
