    Diamonds can be identified by their high thermal conductivity. Their high refractive index is also indicative, but other materials have similar refractivity. Diamonds do cut glass, but other materials above glass on Mohs scale such as quartz do also. Diamonds easily scratch other diamonds, but this damages both diamonds.

  3. one basic step: rub it on sand paper. if it is scratched, it is definitely not diamond

    1. Brilliance

    Brilliance is the internal and external reflection of white light to the eye from a gemstone.

    2. Clarity

    Clarity is the degree to which tiny marks of nature (called inclusions), are not present in the diamond.

    3. Color

    Diamonds range from colorless - the rarest and most valuable - to yellowish, brownish, bluish or even reddish.

    4. Crown

    Crown is the top part of a diamond above the girdle.

    5. Cut

    Cut refers to the arrangement of a diamond facet. A diamond which is "ideal cut" captures and releases the maximum play of light. Cut can be Ideal cut, Deep cut or shallow cut.

    Flashes of different rainbow colors resulting from the dispersion of light is referred as Dispersion of a Diamond.

    7. Flawless

    Flawless Diamonds are those without external or internal blemishes or inclusions seen under 10X magnification.

    8. Girdle

    Girdle is the circumference of diamond which is usually held by prongs of setting and separates the crown and pavilion.

    9. Inclusions

    Inclusions are the natural impurities present in a diamond which were formed during the crystallization process. Inclusions can be minute birthmark specks, bubbles or feathers.

    Pavilion is the bottom part of a diamond below the girdle.

    Shape means the geometric form of the stone. Popular shapes include the round brilliant, marquis, emerald cut, pear and oval.
