  1. Practice makes perfect and no matter how many books you buy, it won't change anything.

It's like telling me that a grammer book in 3rd grade have different pronounciation that a 12th grade. A new baby falls down after a few steps but eventually walks.

So, practice what you are weak on and not what you are good at. If you see something is not good, that is what you practice. It's worthless to practice what you already know.

The best book for sight reading is Berklee guitar book Vol. one which you could order online.

I used this for my students and each book comes with 52 lessons representing one lesson per week.

I can guarantee you that when you reach the 52nd lesson, you will sight read, and be a good guitarist. These books are invaluable.

Then you can get vol.2 for advanced technique and vol.3 which is good but not necessary.

  2. memorizing. flashcards.

  3. all you can do is practice and practice

  4. There are a couple of little books by Roger Evans that I have found worth 5 hours of study with a private teacher and the

books are both under $12.00 at your local book store.

They are good sellers and if they don't have them they can order them for you.

The books are: HOW TO READ MUSIC ($11.95)

and if you are a guitar player then the second book is:

    HOW TO PLAY GUITAR -

Everything You Need To Know To Play The Guitar ($10.95)

The are "easy read" and clearly illustrtated.

In my opinion they are the best for someone who want to grasp the basic of music and understand when other musicians talk about musical terms.

A third book - if you want to have an excellent reference resource and go one step further in learning music is:

The Everything Music Theory Book by Marc Schonbrun.

This one comes with a CD and the cost is $19.95

If you have this 3 books you have the equivalent of 6 hours

of college courses in music. No mean accomplishment!

Good Luck and Enjoy learning to sight read. You'll be surprise

how much more music you can play once you learn to read

    the musical staff.
