  1. Get to it right away! Seriously, don't waste too much time thinking about it; just do it. Get a lesson series or two, get started, get a dictionary, look up some websites, etc. A lot of sources are available and jointly, they will provide you with the knowledge you need.

  2. You're not going to learn Japanese fast. At this point the best thing for you to do is grab a travel phrase book and work on memorizing some key phrases, but unless you're going outside the major cities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, etc.) you really don't have anything to worry about because Japan has specially trained people in various locations--such as train stations and restaurants--who know enough English to help you out.

But don't ask someone on the street what a sign says. Just because they've taken English in school doesn't mean they actually know it or feel confident enough in it to speak with you.

  3. just memorize audio files

about.com has lots of good audio files.

    http://japanese.about.com/library/blsoun...

thats enough to walk around by yourself.

  4. watch animes and j-drama!

or if you don't want that, buy a japanese for dummies books (i have oneee lol)

and learn how to read hiragana and katakana in the least.

also go to japanese-online.com and learn from there. they have conversational things and such that you'll need in japan.

  5. If you can't read a sign on a street in Japan just ask somebody what it says. There English is taught as a requirment in school. Meaning some people will speak english. But if you really want to learn my friend learned pretty fast from a book called Japanese For Dummies. I know it's a sad name for a book but it makes it easy.
