It all depends on what type of TV you have.

Many LCD TVs allow you to turn off the backlight.

If there is no such option and you expect the sound to come from the TV's tuner, there is no other way.

If the source is a DVD player, you can certainly have sound with no video.

switch off the screen and listen surround sound, provided that feature is available in your tv or simple reduce the brightness and contrast of the tv to minimum screen will look as if it is turned off, also lower the contrast better the picture tube life.
