  1. Anyone can get into a computer if they really want to. My advice would be to put a password on your windows login -- go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > [Your Account] > Set Password.

However, if someone is smart enough, there are boot discs that can remove or circumvent user account passwords.

Another layer of security you could put on is setting a password in your bios.  When your computer boots up, it will tell you to strike either  F1, F2, Delete Or Escape to enter setup.

In almost every Bios, there is an option to set a boot password. Once you set it, the computer wont even boot without the correct credentials. -- How ever, if they want to break in enough, the could open your case and take out the battery thus resetting your bios and clearing the password.

Hopefully, if you have this much security, no one would want to get in, but if you are absolutely sure someone will try, I suggest opening the case, and pulling out your RAM (or Memory), and storing it in a safe, static free place until you return.  The computer wont even boot without the RAM.

  2. make up a strong password and get a security program ans make sure that one has a strong password

  3. Just pick a really secure password.

Somehow generate a really long random password, with numbers, letters, punctuation, and mixed caps. At least 30 characters is good enough. Write the password down and take it with you.

    That's what I would do.

  4. For full security you should first set a bios and hard drive passwords and make sure that your hard drive is the only boot device then go into safe mode and set an administrator password, (you may have an administrator account but this is not the same thing) make sure guest account is turned off then log in to your account and set a password there.  Most importantly do not lose your passwords.  You should also as a final security measure make sure that nobody can open the computer case to reset the bios.

  5. Even a semi-geek can easily bypass BIOS passwords and any Windows / NFTS security, even WEP wireless encryption is more secure than all of these.  You can use the windows "encrypt files" technique, that will render the files useless however if your windows password is cracked then your files may be inaccessible to even yourself!

Your only resolve is to convert the HDD to an encrypted volume, truecrypt has this ability to convert your C: drive to a full encrypted volume so when you boot up your PC you have to type the decrypt  passphrase and that is not easily bypassed even by hard core geeks - heck even the NSA will have quite a time using up many resources while cracking your encryption.

  6. If you use windows

    follow the following steps

    click on the start icon,

    the start menu will open,

Click on your display picture at the top of the start menu

Then it will come with options like set password

  7. Passwords are only save when intrusion attempts are made by people with little knowledge of a PC and Operating Systems.

There is practically NO WAY of securing a PC physically against intruders.

I can continue and give you a long story to support this claim, but that is outside the scope of this forum.

For the average secure PC? Sure. Create a long and complicated password and take it with you. A good password is better than no protection at all and will definitely guard against the average intrusion attempt.

PS. You can always remove your Harddrive and if possible lock it away somewhere or even take it away with you.
