  1. For less than $100, you can buy a nice desk at Wal-Mart or Target. Before you go to a lot of trouble trying to make one, check out those stores first--(links to their desks below).

You might consider the ones for computers with the slide out keyboard thingy. I find it handy for papers I'm writing so I can stop and slide them out of the way, do something else on the desktop, and then return to them later!! : )

  2. Sheet of 3/4" plywood on top of two filing cabinets makes a cheap but effective desk.

  3. The easiest way to do it is to get maple, oak or pine board the size you want, sand it, stain it and varnish it.   Then make legs like a saw horse for it.  You can staple canvas to the legs  and use that area to put books or anything else you desire.  The top just sits on it so it's easy to take apart and stash away.

  4. Try "Ikea". They have some pretty neat stuff and much cheaper since you must assemble it yourself. Measure out the area you intend to use and check in at one of their stores. No doubt they are sure going to be able to help you!

  5. Use boards like the others suggest but use concrete building blocks to hold the boards if you do not have filing cabinets. Saw horse legs would get in the way.  They make a special wavy nail to join boards together or you can determine the size of the desk and some lumber stores will cut plywood for you.  I recommend 3/4 inch ACX.  They can tell you what that means at the lumber store.
