Would wood that had a protective paint work?

Would that ruin my board? (burton Punch)

Build it out of wood and cover it with HDPE (High density poly ethelene) plastic - this is the soft white plastic that you can buy in sheets at a plastic store. If you can't find that, try the HDPE "boards" made for building outdoor patios / decks that you can get at the home store - this plastic won't ruin your board as long as you are sure to countersink the screws.
