  1. Water is used to generate power in two ways.
    One- use its fall with velocity to drive a wheel. This technology is called "Hyrdo-electric" power generation.
    Two- You heat the water to obtain steam and use steam to drive the wheel. This technology is called "Thermal Power" Generation.

    Hydro-electric is possible if you have a water reservoir at a height and make it fall thru large diameter pipes to drive turbine wheel. These are prevalent in mountainous regions. You can generate as low as 200KW to as large as x*x MW.

    On Plains, you use the water available, heat it using some sort of fuel and produce steam to drive turbine wheel.

    Water to electricity is produced.
