i've had people tell me to use a cheese grater, but i don't understand how that makes it string-y.

  1. you could do that with a knife and fork. Its easy. just poke a small hole with the knife and rub it with the fork, or the cheese grader. Jeans are made with stringy fibers naturally so the strings will just happen.

  2. This article tells you how to distress/destroy jeans, and it also tells you what you shouldn't do:

  3. find a gun and do some target practice, take the jeans off first

  4. Rub the jeans with the cheese grater until you get the effect. Or to fray cut little slits upwards from the hem then wash them. when they come out the hem will be stringy.
