u don't really need to make it look crappy all u need to do is get a nice lock.

Honestly, by using an effective lock and locking up your bike properly.  People will steal your bike for no reason whatsoever.  If you make it very hard to steal it deters thieves.  Please note that this means using more than just a cable lock; use at least a newer U-Bar lock, remove the front wheel and place it by the rear, and lock those and the frame to something that can not be moved or broken easily.  If your seat is worth stealing you may want a quick release skewer so you can take it with you or lock it up as well.  Maybe not the answer that you are looking for but I've been the victim and known MANY others who have had their bikes or parts stolen as well.

Get quality locks and keep your bike in a visible secure place. Take your bike with you whenever you can like into the office instead of outside. If you need to lock your bike outside carry two different types of locks, combine a U lock and cable lock, something like that.

But don't uglify your bike!

Keep it clean and well maintained. Maybe just maybe the scumbag bike thief will be inspired to get a real job and get an nice bike .....  maybe not. Or maybe if he does steal your bike it will be more recognizable when you get your bike back and he goes to jail.

Or .... keep your bike meticulously beautifully clean and well painted but paint it pink!! Even if that's just the bar tape, accesories, fork.

Crook don't have the b@lls to ride a pink bike. ;-) or try to sell it.

Meanwhile you get to ride a nice bike.

Put loads of mud on it...no one will want to steal a gross looking bike. Or just get loads of friends to kick it in...whatever floats your boat.

Oh...and grafiti on it.
