i dono if this is a carburetor issue or what but it also takes the bike like 10 minutes to warm up. after that it's fine except that it bogs down every once in a while for some reason, especially after it's sat for like an hour and then has been cranked again. this bike is a 1990 yamaha virago 750

  1. You have a idle s***w somewhere on the carb that you can turn.

Sounds like you have old bike/carb.  They (carbs) probably need a rebuild.  Carbs just get old and tired.  This is one of the reasons why cars don't use carb anymore.

    Good Luck...

  2. Look in your owners manual

there is a idle s***w somewhere

  3. First thing to do is check the oil level.  The oil level in the engine needs to be between the two lines.  If there's too much oil, let some out.  (I have a 1985 Virago 700).

Second thing to do is to clean the spark plugs and make sure the gap is correct.  Do this yourself.  In my experience, motorcycle mechanics never set the gap -- they just install the things right out of the box.

Third thing, check the air filter element.  Replace it if it's dirty.  If you have the cleanable kind, then clean it.

Run some carb cleaner gas additive -- buy the little bottle, add about a third of it to a full tank.  I do this a couple of times a year.  It's like a tune-up in a bottle sometimes.

Okay, after that, then look for the idle s***w.
