  1. It depends what degree of sound attentuation you want.

A decrease of 10-20 dB in the mid/high frequency range can be achieved by closing the door and covering the walls with absobent material (cork, styrofoam, etc) and the floor with carpet and underpadding.

BUT ... to decrease bass frequencies and overall sound by 30+ dB you will have to make structural changes. Basically, you have to seal the room to prevent high frequencies getting out and decouple the inner surface (floor, walls and ceiling) from any adjacent room.

There are various ways to do this, but they all come down to introducing some type of elastomer between the existing surface and a new one. In addition you need to use dense/heavy material (like two sheets of drywall) for the new inner surface.

See the link for some further info. Green Glue and RSIC (Resilient Sound Isolation Clips) are two products that really work (Google them).

I built a "soundproofed" home theatre in my basement a few years ago, and used RSIC's, insulation and staggered double wall construction to achieve about 45 dB sound reduction  ... but it took a lot of work and attention to detail. Not a job to take on lightly!

  2. Yep, the packaging foam is the way to go. Also, you need to make it really hermetically closed. You can test that by putting a radio or something outside the door and see if you hear anything from inside.

"Sound proof" by the way, does only exist in very expensive University studies. The only thing you can do is isolate it more or less. Especially the bass is hard to keep inside a room. If you are planning to be really loud you should talk to an expert. It all very much depends on the used speakers and how they are fixed to the floor/walls/ceiling as well.

  3. line your walls with that pointy black packaging foam.
