  1. If it is plugged remove the plug.  If it is not plugged look into getting an exstended magazine tube.

  2. Take th plug  out of the gun- this will give you 5 shots before having to reload.

  3. Akluis, you must have been doing some mean searching and reading there, bud.  You just paraphrased nearly every method ever mentioned on this group.  Problem is, only one is correct.

If you tip the gun up and shake, as I have said often before, you can pull the dowel out easily enough.  Problem is, by doing so, you strip off the two rubber O-rings from the dowel that then turn to sticky gunk in the mag tube within six months and that then continually jams the feeding of the gun.

If someone told you "stuff two pieces of loose rubber into your shotgun's workings and see if they effect the function?", what would *you* say?

That second one about the "retainer cap" on a Mossberg that can be worked on with needlenose pliers....that was one of the biggest loads of c**p that any "expert gunsmith" ever came up with.  It's not only stupidity in motion, it's patently dangerous to suggest to anyone that they s***w around with a weapon without knowing jack about what they're doing.

The third....the third is the proper way and the only safe way.  It is no more complicated than switching barrels and takes roughly about the same amount of time.

  4. What kind of Mossberg? A 500? The way they attach the barrel you usually cant put a magazine tube extension on it. I would say get a stock that holds shells. That would be your best alternative.

Edit: Oh, yeah I forgot about that. METROPOLIS1 is right they do put a dowel in the tube. Taking that out ought to increase the tube capacity by 2-3 shells depending on the model.

  5. remove the plug and add a magazine tube extension.

  6. You could increase the capacity by a couple of rounds by simply removing the "plug" from the magazine tube.  More than that would require that you replace the magazine tube with a longer tube if that can be done on your shotgun.  Just be aware that it is illegal to hunt any migratory water fowl with a shotgun that has a capacity of more than three cartridges.  Check the hunting laws where you live to be sure that you don't violate any other possible cartridge limitation laws.

  7. I suspect your shotgun is plugged

See, by federal law, anyone hunting ducks and geese or other waterfowl MUST have a gun that can only hold 3 rounds alltogether.  Not just have 3 rounds in it at the time, impossible to load a 4th.

Most pump guns actually can hold 4 of the 2 3/4th shells in the magazine and 1 in the chamber.

What the manufacturer does is inserts a plastic or wooden rod that is as long as 2 shotgunshells end-to-end in the magazine.  This rod is called a 'plug' as it is too big to take out, and effectively changes a 4 shot magazine into a 2 shot magazine, plus one in the chamber = 3 total rounds.

However, if you disassemble the gun, you can take the plug out, reassemble it, and have a 5 shot shotgun, exept you will need to put the plug back in if you ever go duck hunting

METROPOL has a great video, but it does NOT show how to get into the magazine.

go here for your manual and see how they tell you do to it

You will need to remove the barrel, but do NOT need to pop out the pins and remove the trigger group or the bolt. Once the barrel is removed, look at the front end (furthest from the trigger) of the magazine tube, there is a retainer in there to keep the spring from popping out, but the retainer has a hole in it.

    So, with the barrel off...

Some guys say you can point the gun at the floor and do some shaking and the plug which is about as wide as a pencil, will eventually shake through that hole.

Some people say reach into the hole with a needle nose pliers and push some tabs and get the retaining cap to release...but it will be under pressure and want to come flying out, so you got to ease it out.

A last resort technique if the shake method failed and you can't figure out how to release the retainer cap is to wrap some leather or cardboard around the front 1/2 inch of the magazine tube (it is thicker and stronger there) and using a vice-grip, grab the magazine tube and unscrew it from the receiver itself, which would then allow you to get at the contents and remove the plug.

I say shake, shake some more and then shake some more and really try your damnest to shake the plug out before trying either of the other two more complicated methods

  8. Use it for what it's worth!*

  9. This Mossberg should hold more shells than that..... It most likely has a wooden dowel in the magazine tube to prevent you from putting more cartridges in it.....

    Heres what to do....

Clear the firearm of any ammo..... Next unscrew the barrel nut from the end of the magazine tube and remove the barrel from the shotgun.....  Next point the stock (where it meets your shoulder) up to the ceiling and shake it. A wooden dowel should come out of the hole where the barrel nut was....

Mossberg does this because some states, municipalitys and countys limit a shotguns capacity to 3 cartridges.... Other areas dont. .. Mossberg does this to all there shotguns so they are legal no matter where they are sold......
