How can i make my sterilized tap water taste better?

after i boil my tap water, it still has that dry, tap taste to it. is there a way to make it taste more like bottled water? or is it due to the location i'm living?

Why are you boiling your water? I am guessing it is for health reasons? If so then a basic filter, as mentioned by another poster simply will not be a good choice.

First to answer your question. Boiling will kill organisms in the water. However, it also removes pure water from releasing steam. This means all of the contaminants in your water weather it be minerals, chemicals, or the now dead organisms are still there and now more concentrated than before. This is why the water tastes worse. Other than killing the organisms you really haven't made the water healthier.

Basic filters like Pur and Brita only remove some basic chemicals to improve the taste and odor of the water. It does remove most of the health related contaminates. However if you are satisfied with just killing the organisma and filtering out some of the minerals which are now affecting the taste you can run the boiled water through these cheap filters. Just don't do it while the water is hot as this will break down the activated charcoal used to filter.

If you want clean water for health reasons your best bet is to get a purification system. The highest rated system can only be outdone by a home distillery which is extremely epensive to buy and maintian and messy to keep clean. I recommend only one but you will have to ask for it. It is highly rated with the NSF, WQA, Consumer Reports, and was used in Extreme Makeover Home Edition because it is the best. While it costs more than a Pur of Brita filter at first in the long run it is actually cheaper per gallon. Plus you save on home utilities from boiling the water.

The mineral content of water varies considerably from place to place. In general, surface water, rivers, lakes and streams, contain less minerals than grond water, wells and springs.

The mineral content of water reflects the nature of the geologic fromation with which the water has been in contact. The most abundant minerals dissolved in water are salts of calcium, magnesium, strontium, ferrous iron, and manganese. The cations(negative ions) these meatls are assocoated with are bicarbonates, carbonates, sulfates, and chlorides.

These minerals produce a condition in water knowen as hardness. The more dissolved minerals the water contains the harder the water. Hard water minerals react with soap to form a precipitate. they also form scale in pipes.

Boiling water is one method of disinfecting water. Disinfection is a process of destroying disease causing microorganisms in water.

When the temperature of water is raised such as when boiling, the amount of dissolved minerals that the water can keep in solution becomes less. The excess minerals come out of the water and form scale. The white deposit in the bottom of a tea kettle is an example of this process.

The minerals are not destroyed they simply move out of the water.

A basic rule of chemistry is that matter can neither be created nor destroyed it can only be changed from one form to another.

Is bottled water or filtered water better?

While much bottled water is of good quality, there are little or no regulations or means of ensuring bottled water quality... it is a self-policed industry for the most part. In contrast, the home-water treatment industry is very heavily regulated. Manufacturers must do extensive testing and reporting to prove their products effectiveness at providing quality water. Manufacturers are required to supply "Performance Data Sheets" demonstrating the products ability to reduce certain contaminants; bottled water companies are not required to demonstrate their waters quality.

What is TDS?

Total Dissolved Solids, the total measurement by weight of all solids that are dissolved in water. The dissolved solids in water are primarily calcium and magnesium and would not be a measurement of contamination. Tests that measure the conductivity of water (often used by companies selling reverse osmosis and distillation system) only give a rough estimate of dissolved solids, mostly minerals, and do not show water quality. Is Chlorine harmful?

Chlorine was first added to a community water system in 1908 in Chicago and was instrumental in eliminating many types of water-borne disease such as Cholera and Typhoid fever. Why do some areas test negative for chlorine?

Virtually all city water systems contain some level of chlorine. The level will vary based on outdoor temperature, the season, distance from water utility and current usage. While chlorine may sometimes be undetectable on a certain day with a standard OTO test kit, that level can change dramatically day to day. Also some cities use ammonia at certain times as a disinfectant in order to reduce chlorination by products. Without chlorine, the dangers of water borne disease would be too significant. An undetectable chlorine level, on a certain day, does not eliminate the need for an effective home filtration system.

What do you do if you have water contaminated by radioactive matter?

What is the best container for storing filtered water?

Glass is always best, however if glass is not practical, then a high-grade polycarbonate material is best. Clear plastic bottles and pitchers with a #1 in the recycle triangle on the bottom, like the bottles used by Evian and the higher quality bottled waters, are the best option for water storage since they have been shown to release the lowest levels of plastic component chemicals into water. Translucent, colored or bottles with a number other than 1 on the bottom should be avoided because there is the possibility of higher levels of chemicals leeching into the water from the plastic.

Do water treatment products require FDA approval?

You should try buying a water filter - it may work better than boiling the water. I have a water filter and my water certainly doesn't taste dry.
