  1. not to be mean or anything.

but if you want to make a varsity team, and you serve underhand?

    mmm. not so much.

serving is the easiest way to score points and to get inside the other teams mind.

remember: volleyball is 90% mental and 10%heart.

  2. For sure you should be serving overhand if you plan on making a varsity team.

    Left foot forward

toss the ball over your head

    step into the ball

make contact with the ball above your head with a stiff firm open hand.

Your best bet is to find a wall and practice till your hand hurts.  You don't need anyone the ball comes back to you.  You can do it.

    Good luck

  3. Well i do really well on my under hand serve, and i'm a right-handed server. so I have my left side facing the net, so i'm facing side ways. I have the ball in my left hand, and i keep my left arm straight, and then i just hit the ball out of my hand with my right. I don't throw the ball before I hit the ball, like i see many people do. Hope this Helps!

  4. just play more

  5. Underhand sideserving is good.  Do not toss the ball but drop your ball supporting hand just as you are about to hit it (like as if the ball is on a pedestal) AND do remember to have the valve of the ball at the top of the ball; this way the ball has an erratic way of falling and is less predictable in how it can be bumped by the other side's player.  You could either float it over the net, which is the best, or put a horizontal spin on it (like a planet rotating on its axis)

Overhand serving is great too but timing is more important.  Again, make sure the valve of the ball is up top.  You could either make the ball float or spin (like a wheel)

Either one is effective.  Practice, practice, practice!  Good luck

  6. OVERHAND serve (the official serve)

1.keep you hand flat like a bored

    2. make your toss where your serving hand is at it's highest point

3.keep your eye on the ball

    4. make contact at it's highest point

    5. swing and follow thru

Underhand serve (the serve you use when you first learn volleyball)

    1. place the ball in oppisite of serving hand

    2. make serving hand into fist

    3.keep ball in hand

    4. don't toss ball

    5. make contact while ball is in hand and follow thru

I know you only asked for the underhand but is important you know how to overhand serve too

    Good luck

  7. most people who serve underhanded make the mistake of tossing the ball in the air.  If you are right handed, just keep the ball on your left hand, make a fist with your right hand and hit the ball (without tossing) with your right hand.

Really, you should learn how to serve overhanded though.

  8. Mostly likely, for a varsity level volleyball team you need an overhand serve. It is a lot like hitting but you toss it yourself. Try a two hand toss and spot the ball with your other hand. Heres a website that teaches you how.

  9. Rich makes a good point in keeping the ball in your hand and serve it up that way, no need to toss it anywhere.

I am puzzled regarding underhanded serves at the varsity level as this is something I am not accoustomed to. I do coach Volleyball at the high school level and this is not acceptable at our level.

I recommend you find a camp this summer as it will help in all areas as serving is one aspect of many.
