  1. It's a hard thing to do. You have to make the twist unexpected, but also believable.

For example, just when you believe Snape really is good, JK Rowling has him kill Dumbledore (of course we figure out later that he was told to do so). No one saw that coming.

A good twist is when a character switches from good to evil or vice versa. In Lord of the Rings, Smeagle goes from good to evil to good to evil. You don't know what side he's on until the very end of the series. It's nerve-racking, which keep the reader turning pages.

Lots of twists happen at the climax of a story. Like when Frodo was in Mount Doom, and he put the ring on. That's a kind of twist that makes the reader hold their breath while reading.

Some twists involve a main character's death. Others involve a main character coming back to life. Remember when everyone thought Gandalf was dead? The twist was having him come back as the White Wizard. I didn't see that coming.

Any time you suprise the readers, you've created a twist. aybe that twist is showing a new side to an old character. Maybe the twist has something to do with the plot or the setting. Good twists are everywhere in books, and they make a story extra interesting.

  2. Betrayals are always great plot twists. A certain character that suddenly switches sides, and maybe brings down some other characters, is always going to grab the readers attention.

Take Snape at the end of the 6th Harry Potter book for example. That was a brilliant plot twist.
