How can i make soil acidic and alkaline?

i'm doing a project about ph necessary for growth of plants,i was wondering how to make soil acidic and basic..do i get any chemicals at the local stores?

  1. The amount of material added to adjust the pH depends on the mineral content of the soil you are using. However material will be available at any good garden center.

    To lower the pH you can use ammonium sulfate. This is easily available as an inorganic spring fertilizer and is less harsh on the soil plants than elemental sulfur. However it does add a great deal of nitrogen as well as sulfur. Elemental sulfur is another choice that does not alter the fertility.

    To raise the pH prilled dolomite lime is frequently used. It adds calcium and magnesium to soil. To use lime in a matching experiment you may need to balance the NPK with what you apply to lower the soil pH. Be sure to look for all NPK information on everything you use.
