  1. check your brakes, tie rods, control arms, wheel bearings, brake lines, brake pads/shoes, rotors/drums, fuel lines, etc

I would also change all the filters, including oil filter, air filter and most often overlooked, fuel filter. If you have a carburetor, the fuel filter is in the carb right in the fuel inlet, if you got fuel injection, it's most likely underneath the car inline with the fuel line.

also if you have a carburetor, make sure all the air horn screws (the top plate of the carb, right under the air cleaner), are tight, not TOO tight (you could damage the gasket if you overtighten them), being a 1986 model, they would be TORX screws. Off the top of my head I don't know what size TORX they are, but it wouldn't hurt to buy a complete set of Torx screwdrivers, especially if you get them from Sears/Craftsman because they'll be cheap and pretty good.

make sure you got fresh gas in it, do an oil change, it would probably be a good idea to flush the radiator, changing the transmission fluid wouldn't hurt, unless the old fluid smells burnt than don't even waste your time........

    etc etc etc

  2. Have it inspected....you have to have it inspected to get the stickers on it anyways...
