How can i make videos playable on a DVD player

Question

I'm wondering how i can make my AVI files play in a dvd player i burnt some to a disc today and it didn't recognize it. anyone know how to? I'd prefer free software i don't want to spend $50 on a program can it be done in virtual dub?

Standard DVD players read the .Vob format, the files you have now are in AVI format..
