How can i motivate myself to run?

how can i motivate myself to run long distances, every day or so, and not to stop while running, and getting myself in running shoes to start running?

  1. Set a goal and determine that you are going to accomplish it.  You don't have to start out running long distances, you can work up to it.  If you live in a neighborhood, use the blocks as landmarks.  Work up to going around one block, then add another.  You can walk the shorter parts of the block and run the longer parts.  Change it every week until you can run without stopping, then continue to add distance.  I don't have blocks, but there are markers and street signs (I live in the middle of nowhere where two farm-to market roads meet).  I set my goal to be to run to a specific marker and back, then pick a farther marker.  Do you have an iPod?  I also use the Nike+ system to track my runs.  The website has a feature that will allow you to set goals (distances, # of workouts, calories burned, or time) and tracks your progress towards meeting those goals.  You can take part in challenges for beginners, etc.  I don't like to run, but I find ways to get myself motivated by setting goals.

For me the absolute best thing is competition.  If I know I'm going to be running a 5K 10K or even a marathon, I want to be able to run my best, so I'm going to train for it.  There's nothing better than achieving your goals in a race.  I just signed up for a marathon yesterday that will take place in January and I'm already more excited about training.

The toughest thing is getting out the door.  I always told myself if I could just make it outside I would be alright.  The mind makes about 1 trillion excuses, but once you get started all the excuses sound silly...Trick your mind...Wake up, don't take a shower, don't get coffee, just sleepily slide on your running stuff, slowly creep outside and then you can get after it!!!

  5. I only let myself watch my favorite tv shows if i am on my treadmill. So hour long shows get me running for an hour, half hour shows are for half hour runs. It keeps me running each week.
