  1. Most university exams focus on the following:

    -Logic

-English proficiency (think grammar and subject-verb agreement)

    -Reading and Comprehension

-Mathematics (this would include basic algebra, fractions, and problem solving. sometimes geometry/trig.  know logs, sin, cos, etc.)

-some schools have Filipino proficiency as well. (same as English proficiency/reading and comprehension except this is in Tagalog)

THE ACET IS NO DIFFERENT.  Only HARDER. hehe.. I'm laughing but it's true.  And I can't remember anymore if they had a Filipino portion.

If you're worried about passing go to national book store and buy some reviewers.  It pays to familiarize yourself with the style of questions.  Like they say, practice makes perfect.. or at least gives you a better entrance exam score.

Also, the ACET is not everything.  Part of The Ateneo application includes writing an essay on a specific topic, your high school grades, and 2 recommendation letters.

So I suggest that you to the following:

    - Work on getting good grades.  Think 88 and above.  If you have great grades in H.S., good for you.  If not, work hard to improve them in the remaining months.  That, at least, shows that you have the capacity to improve and do well when you set your mind to it.

    - Get very good recommendation letters.  What subject are you getting your highest grade in?  Identify that, work harder, and talk to your teacher every now and then.  Then ask for a good recommendation letter when it's time to submit those college applications.  Most teachers will give you a good recommendation but it is more convincing when they believe in what they are saying.

    - When it comes time to write that essay, pick a topic that you feel passionate about.  Think it out, write your thoughts down, polish it, then have someone read it for proofreading.  Preferably, it's someone who has good grammar.  I can not stress enough how important it is to WRITE THE ESSAY YOURSELF.  If you're not confident about your grammar, writing skills, then the proof reader can come in to polish it for you.  This way, it's still your essay with a makeover. :)

Finally, if you do well in the ACET, and you have the grades, the recommendation, and the essay, then you're pretty much guaranteed a slot.  At worst, you get wait listed.

Another tip:  Be pro-active.  Go to Ateneo for the results once it's out.  If you end up being on the wait list, be persistent and confirm your slot as soon as it is allowed.  If the deadline for confirmation for those who got accepted is May 2, and May 3 is the date they asked you to check if a slot opened for the wait listed people, go to Ateneo on May 3 to confirm your slot in person!

Whew!  I think that's all the knowledge I can impart on getting IN.  Staying in is another matter!  Good luck!

  2. Make sure to apply for a course that is REALLY REALLY REALLY your interest/strength. You can also try applying for an easy course, if you just wanna get it (as a first step).

I failed their test coz I applied for a course that was suggested to  me but not my forte.

    Some also take review exams.

    Good luck!

p.s. : decades later, I realize it is not really the school(at first I did, then through the years I saw I was better than a number of these people I got to work with) though the top schools are worshipped by corporations and ambitious parents. Hard work and dedication will put you on top.
