  1. depending on how old they are:

you could set up a class project.

You could use art for several different subjects.

You could have them write letters to the soldiers in Iraq.

You could make a video with your class.

    learn about recycling.

    act out a play.

give them a project and divide them  up in teams so they can learn to work as a team. have group discussions from a question and answer platform.

have them learn about a country and make food and art from that country.

if its math, give them points for getting it done and getting the answers right, then give them a reward for doing it.

have a reading corner in the room, have some throw pillows to lie on.

Get some rats and an aquarium and have the class study them/take care of them.  they make great pets!

    have them write a story.

write a chain story, one person writes a sentence or paragraph and the next person adds on with another one, give everyone a turn to add to that story then read it out loud.

    play hang man,

    charades,

the game apples to apples its good for vocabulary,

    scrabble is good too.

have  a career day and each child dresses up in what they want to be when they are grown up and come to school dressed up and give a short description to the class about their chosen profession.

    give the kids dance lessons.

    learn your state song.

    learn the national anthem.

play password, choose the words from readers they have in the room.

have each child bring a picture of someone they care about in their family or one of them selves and have them make their own scrapbook page.

teach them the difference between mammals reptiles and birds.

pick a favorite animal and do reports on those.

I hope this gives you some ideas! Happy teaching!

  4. I use centers or learning stations during math and reading after I introduce the concept with a very small mini-lesson to the whole class. This way I can focus on the needs of students in small groups. Sure, I end up teaching the objective about five or six times a day, but each time is different because of the group.

The small groups are formed according to their needs in both subjects and are changed on a regular basis (as often as needed). As long as you have a good management system in place, it really works.
