First u must know the rules. Then u must know theutility of the forces u have given. Finalley defending ur fort u must try to attack the opponents forceses. It  will come by constant practice& sharp thinking to attack theopponents fort.

I learnt to play chess by reading chess books. the best books to get are Bobby Fischer books. The object of the game is to protect your king using ALL of your pieces while at the same time trying to capture your apponents king using all of your pieces. Against other people join a chess club. Form one at school or join a dedicated one, get coaching.

Get a chess computer, or a programme for the PC like Chessmaster, a very strong programme powerful enough to beat a grandmaster, with selectable skill levels.

Play online. There will be rooms for novices, amateurs, intermediates and experts.

Get you play rated. A computer can do this. A chess club can work out a rating after a number of games, but only FIDÉ (Fédération International des Échecs) can give an official rating.

If you dont know how to play chess just look up the rules and objectives in google or something then ask someone you know that knows how to play chess to actually play with you a couple of times until you get the objective of the game and how to move all your pieces.

Go to your local library and take out a book on general chess rules and strategies.  Ask a librarian for help if you are unfamiliar with the system used to store books (usually Dewey decimal).

Another option is to find a free chess program on the Internet which includes tutorials.

If I misunderstood your question, and you're looking for opponents, you can find some on the Internet as well, but it's pretty good to play against a computer (software you can find), especially when it has customizable levels.

Find another player, get a chess board, and place the correspoding pieces on the board.  Then declare a game between you and the other person.

I would just write how to play chess in this answer, but it's so complicated, and even if i did explain it,i probably would have done a bad job of it and you wouldn't understand a thing and it would have been a waste of time for both of us. So instead, I found this amazing site that teaches you how to play. It shows flash movies, so it's easier to understand than just reading.
